1. If you aren’t sure whether an egg is fresh or hard boiled, should you crack it to find out? Not necessarily. Instead of creating a big mess, you can instead spin the egg. If it wobbles then it is raw and if it spins easily then you know that it is hard boiled. As you might guess, this is a whole lot easier and cleaner than cracking it.

2. What should you do if you drop an egg on the floor and it breaks? You should pick it up. No really, if you drop an egg on the floor and it breaks then you can sprinkle it heavily with salt and then sweep it up. This makes it much easier to clean.

3. Can you freeze an egg? Yes, you can freeze an egg if you separate it first. However, to ensure optimal success and freshness, you should only choose fresh and uncracked eggs. By separating them, you can freeze and then use them up to 12 months later.

4. What causes the greenish ring around boiled eggs and is it harmful? The green coloration typically occurs when eggs are overcooked, cooked at too high a temperature, or when there is a high amount of iron in the cooking water. It occurs when the egg’s sulfur and iron compounds reacting to the yolk. Therefore, if you really want to avoid this problem, you should carefully evaluate the time and temperature that you use while cooking your eggs.

5. How can you best determine an egg’s freshness? There are several ways to determine if an egg is fresh. Here are some proven things that you can do:

A. Purchase it when it is fresh to begin with and then pay attention to the expiration date and use it within 3 weeks from its packing date.

B. Don’t even try to judge an egg’s freshness by placing it in saltwater. Instead, use a more reliable test. Hold up your white egg to a light and you will then be able to see the air pocket. The less pocket of air the better and fresher.

C. Another way is to crack the egg and evaluate the color of the egg white. If the egg white appears cloudy then it is fresher than one that is clear.

D. Put your egg in cold water and if it is old then it will float and you should definitely not eat an egg that floats.

6. Are brown eggs better than white? The color of an egg doesn’t have anything to do with its apparent quality. It simply means that a different breed of hen produced the egg and it matters not which one you choose.

7. Why shouldn’t you keep eggs at room temperature? They must be put in the refrigerator because they are perishable food and by putting them in the fridge, you can ensure that they remain fresh.

8. What is a dried egg mix? It is a blend of dried whole eggs, nonfat dry milk, soybean oil and a small amount of salt that is sold in packages and is equivalent to about six eggs. It is often used in disaster feedings and for low income programs.
